Board of Regents to approve tuition and fees, academic tenure

By Melody MendozaThe Texas A&M-University System are meeting May 3 and 4 for the approval of tuition and fees for the 11 A&M universities.

If approved, 10 members of the A&M System will undergo a tuition increase, including A&M-San Antonio.

President Maria Hernandez Ferrier, Provost Brent Snow, Dr. Charles “Chuck” Rodriguez, vice president for strategic initiatives and development, and Kenneth Mitts, vice president for finance and administration, are attending the meeting at A&M-College Station.

Also on the agenda for A&M-San Antonio is the approval of academic tenure. The item, listed as number 38 on the agenda, is scheduled for discussion at 11 a.m. May 4. Meetings are scheduled to follow each other consecutively and may start earlier or later than the posted time depending on the length of the discussions and the reports of previous meetings, according to the open meetings notice.

Joe Garcia, special assistant for academic affairs, explained that tenure track is a designation that faculty members attain after being a professor for seven years. He added that it is a faculty privilege and holds those faculty to certain responsibilities and services.

Garcia said at this University, a faculty member up for tenure track goes through an evaluation by a committee of staff from the same school. The committee measures the faculty member’s research, teaching and service.

Then, the committee recommends the member to the chair and the recommendation goes down the chain from the provost to University president.

Finally, the Board of Regents has to approve the members who are up for tenure track at the meeting, which will be voted on during this month’s meeting today and Friday.
