CLEP all you want this Spring

By Ingrid Wilgen

For the first time, Texas A&M University-San Antonio students can take advantage of CLEP tests, College-Level Examination Program exams.

“CLEPing” allows students to earn the same amount of credit as if they had taken the class on campus and for less money.

Currently, CLEP credits are considered transfer credits, said Director of Student Success Kim Nañez.

As the university is still an upper division school, there is no credit cap. Students need 30 university residency hours to complete their degree, she said.

“But, this policy should be changing Fall 2016,” Nañez said. “The developing CLEP policies are pending approval on our downward expansion. The new policy may limit the amount of CLEP credits, and should offer more exam choices.”

“A student has to meet with their advisor to find out what CLEP exam will satisfy their degree plan and that the university will accept credit for,” Nañez said.

More than 30 exams are available which satisfy a variety of core requirements such as a foreign language, biology and college algebra.

A list of accepted courses can be found on the A&M CLEP page.

To CLEP a class, register at collegeboard.org.

Each exam is $80. Payments are made through the “My Account” section on the College Board site. Once paid students will receive a registration confirmation.

In addition, a test administration fee of $20 is required, payable at the student business office, Suite 135 in the Madla building, or by phone at 210-784-2032.

When all fees are paid and the registration confirmation is in hand prospective students can schedule a test administration date. There are two testing times daily.

Testing Center Coordinator Julie Williams said the test is well suited for those have obtained knowledge through life experience, such as a native Spanish speaker CLEPing out of a foreign language requirement.

Call the testing center, located in the Welcome Center Room 106, at 210-784-1366, with questions or for exam registration help, Williams said.

“We have lots of availability and we encourage students to take advantage of the service,” she said.

I have worked a lot of jobs in my life: biscuit and coleslaw maker, waitress, veterinary assistant, medical maintenance technician and soldier. The list goes on. Very few of them became part of my life like journalism. I eat it. I breath it. I roll in it. Then I write. I tell stories through the lens. The more I do the better I get. Two semesters as photo editor for the Ranger, the San Antonio College paper, gives a strong foundation that my experiences as managing editor for The Mesquite will continue to build on. My goal as a communications-journalism major, at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, is to become a great storyteller. Stories are our history. It is what our progeny build their lives on. My journey is clear, keep learning, keep listening, never stop creating.
