Tarleton University’s Student Government Association and Athletics Department has invited universities across the state to participate in a charitable event that will benefit the residents of Erath County. A&M-San Antonio’s SGA is actively involved  in the Fill the Field event that will be held on the field of the Tarleton Memorial Stadium in Stephenville Texas on March 31  from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Taking into consideration the magnitude of this event, our SGA took it upon themselves to contribute in every possible way to TSU’s effort to help their community,” Zaira Rodriguez, SGA president said.

Erath County (pop. 36, 184)  includes the communities of Stephenville, Dublin, Three Way, Morgan Mill, Bluff Dale, Lingleville, Huckabay, Selden, Alexander, Duffau, and Clairette. According to SGA President Zaira Rodriguez, Tarleton has reached is collaborating with TCU to assist the county to support its residents. “A lot of the children that are born in Erath County are born into poverty,” Rodriguez said.  The outreach event, she said, is a way for the combined SGA’s to strengthen their relationships with residents in communities in hard-hit areas.

In addition to helping area residents, Rodriguez said, the event is also a way for SGAs to coordinate and get to know one another better.

During the Fill the Field event, participants will be literally filling up the Tarleton Memorial Stadium’s field with their donations. Donations include water, clothes, non-perishable foods, canned goods and cash.

“We will donate these goods to the Erath County Community pantries and places that provide to those who have fallen on hard times,” according to the donation letter from TSU’s SGA and Athletics Department.

Groups willing to participate must register on TSU’s website due to the structure of the event.

According to TSU’s website, “The field will be sectioned off into units of 15’ x 15’ made of 4 smaller squares. A group can adopt either an entire unit or just one individual square – depending on how much you plan to donate.”

“TAMU-SA SGA has fully committed to fill an entire 15’ x 15’ unit,” Rodriguez said.

The event is open to the entire student body. There are three locations associated with TAMU-SA where students can drop off their donations, at the Gillette student center, another in the Gillette annex, and one located in the student center at the Satellite campus. Directions to the satellite campus can be found at the help desk located in the Gillette student center.
