The following is a letter to the editor sent in by Jacob Goldstein, the 2021 and 2022 student body president at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
Mobilizing Conservative Voices: A Breakthrough for Ideological Expression at Texas A&M University-San Antonio
In an era defined by diverse political viewpoints, it is imperative for academic institutions to embrace and foster ideological diversity. Texas A&M University-San Antonio has long been home to passionate left-leaning student organizations, advocating for their causes and engaging in meaningful discussions. However, it is high time we address the pressing need for conservative students to have a platform where they can mobilize, express their concerns, and voice their opinions without reservation.
As a former student body president, I’ve had the privilege of serving the campus community at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. During my tenure, I governed the Student Government Association in a fair and inclusive manner, prioritizing the needs and aspirations of all students. It was within this apolitical approach that I came to recognize the scarcity of opportunities available for conservative students to effectively express themselves.
For far too long, conservative students have felt marginalized or silenced, struggling to find an outlet where they can freely articulate their concerns and perspectives. This phenomenon of “closet conservatism” is not unique to our campus – it is a nationwide reality that highlights the urgent need to create spaces where conservative voices can thrive.

In response to what he described as an ideological “imbalance,” Goldstein is establishing a chapter of the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) at A&M-San Antonio.
Goldstein said the founding of a YAF chapter is not about creating division or promoting one ideology over another.
“It is about rectifying the longstanding lack of representation for conservative students,” Goldstein said in his letter to the editor.
