What Does Student Governance Mean to You?

In April, students elected psychology major Mary E. Walker to become A&M-San Antonio’s Student Government Association president. Walker ran unopposed.  And, only 28 students voted from a population of more than 5,000 students. From our perspective, that was concerning for a fast-growing campus with a diverse student population. Did the students not know about SGA, or did they not care? We learned through surveys and one-on-one conversations that they definitely do care. The problem? A high percentage of students are unaware of the role of student government in their lives. As part of a three-week reporting project, we set out to provide students with an overview of Student Government’s purpose, structure, finances, priorities and communication strategy with the student body. And that’s when we discovered other problems we didn’t expect. Read the articles below.
