Society of Human Resources Management hosts #METOO #TIMESUP

Tarana Burke, founder of the #metoo movement leaves TIME Magazine readers with a question at the end of her speech:

“When you hear #MeToo, will you stand up and say #NoMore?”

The Spring Learning Event at Texas A&M-University San Antonio will discuss the legal actions that take place when there are #METOO and #TIMESUP cases. This free event, open to the public, is sponsored by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and presentations will be from 6-8 p.m. in the Vista Room in Central Academic Building on Tuesday, April 3.

Founder and faculty advisor for SHRM at A&M-San Antonio, Adrian Guardia, says the event will do more than talk about what these movements are, but also the results these movements have on those involved.

“The 2018 Spring Learning Event seeks to call attention to #METOO and #TIMESUP movements and the resulting implications and imperatives of these movements for employees and employers as they navigate the workplace,” Guardia said in an email. “Rodney Klein will discuss the guidance from the EEOC for employees and employers, with an expectation on how #METOO and #TIMESUP movements have changed the calculus for the agency in its own training and education, and the resources it provides to the workplace.”

Three lawyers, including Professor Cris Houston, JD, will speak about both of these movements and what happens on behalf of both plaintiff and the defendant during these cases. An Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) representative will also be there to speak about the changes that this movement has caused and the resources that are provided in the workplace. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask panelists their questions regarding these movements in a Q&A session after the entire presentation.

#METOO is a movement originally founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke and is intended to help survivors of sexual violence know that they are not alone and find guidance to heal from their experiences. #TIMESUP is a movement created in 2018 by women in Hollywood to address inequality and injustices in the workplace such as sexual harassment.”

With all the news stories in the nation’s media about these cases, professor Cris Houston says that this event will help educate the attendees more on what their rights are and the laws that are there to protect them.

“I think that people need to know that if they’re ever propositioned by a boss, or someone in a position of power on the job, that they have rights and that they can say no. They do not have to give in just to keep their jobs,” Houston said. “The important thing to know is that times have changed and that this type of illegal sexual harassment will not be tolerated any longer. I think once everybody is properly educated, we will stop seeing such rampant incidents such as these.”

The Spring Learning Event is brought to the university as an open and educational platform that will also be live, streamed, recorded and does not require guests to RSVP. More information about this event can be found through JagSync.
