Society sheds light on injustices

The Justice Society at Texas A&M University-San Antonio is scheduled to host its monthly officer meeting from 3-4 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Central Academic Building, Suite 324.

The meeting is free and open to A&M-SA students and the public.

Martin A. Calderon, Justice Society president, encourages those who are passionate about crimes, discrimination or injustices to attend officer meetings to provide input and recommendations.

“Justice is a broad topic; we try to break it down by selecting a different theme every year. This year’s theme was children. We had two events this year to bring awareness to the injustices of children,” said Calderon.

The society will discuss officer reports and the status of officer projects Nov. 13. Members will discuss upcoming training courses and review information and schedules for 2019. Attendees can also expect to be a part of conversations about injustices that officers have encountered and the resolution of such issues.

Attendees are welcome to bring notepads, something to write with and may bring food items but are not required to.

Formerly known as the Pre-Law Society, the renamed and revamped Justice Society has been up and running since the spring of 2017. The organization has given back to the community in a variety of ways from raising awareness to hosting volunteer events, Calderon said.

The organization wants to spread the word throughout campus.

“We are always looking for ways to expand and improve our organization, we enjoy trying new things to see what is working and what’s not working,” said Calderon.

The monthly meetings help ensure that members are on the same page and students and the public stay informed. The goal is to create a transparent environment for students here, Calderon said.

“I believe that every organization should be transparent to keep the students and members of TAMUSA well-informed,” Calderon said.

Calderon hopes by hosting these meetings the organization will gain a better awareness and stay informed about things that matter most to people. He hopes that everyone will someday be as passionate as he is about making a difference and believes that the only way to do to so is to learn and grow.

“As an organization we continue to learn and grow. We keep ourselves educated on injustices that occur around campus and in everyday life. The only way to improve is to learn. Learning by experience helps us to know what to do for next time. Failure leads to learning,” said Calderon.

Students can look for advertisements about the society posted on JagSync and information boards around the Central Academic Building.

There are no deadlines to register for the officer meeting. Students can sign up on JagSync or simply show up.

Meetings and location times are subject to change at the discretion of membership and may be canceled due to inclement weather.
