South Side vegan restaurant offers healthy Tex-Mex

By Jocelynn Mireles

A pioneering new vegan restaurant, Viva Vegeria, puts a new twist on the city’s popular Tex-Mex cuisine.

Located on 1422 Nogalitos, the restaurant offers healthy alternatives to popular Tex- Mex dishes, and a new food and drink happy hour catering to its South Side clientele.

The Latino artwork on the walls, prayer candles and the building decor give customers an at-home feeling, making them feel like they’re eating a traditional meal at abuela’s house.

Friendly employees add to the comforting atmosphere as they greet patrons.

“I’m always motivated to work,”  said Michael Torres, a server. “My co-workers have become my friends. It’s just such a fun ambiance.”

On the menu, customers will find traditional dishes with a vegan touch such as flautas with sweet potato filling, colorful side salad and spicy black beans.

There is also a side patio for those who like to socialize outdoors.

Viva Vegeria works with various local vendors and farmer’s markets to purchase seasonal ingredients incorporated in the dishes.  Everything is handmade because the owner believes in the art of real food preparation and not using boxed convenient products.

“If you’re going to have a place like this, it needs to become a place of education and knowledge,” said Fred Garza the owner and chef.

Garza wants customers to know that eating healthy doesn’t mean spending lots of money and traveling a long distance to natural grocery stores.

“All the ingredients I incorporate in my dishes can be found at the HEB in the West, East, and South sides of San Antonio,” Garza said.

On Oct. 31, Viva Vegeria will celebrate Halloween with an event called “All Souls Fest.” The event will have a costume contest, treats and drinks for those who attend.

About the Author

Jocelynn Mireles
Growing up in Denton, Texas, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do following high school. I was involved in many campus organizations and worked as a nanny and carhop at Sonic for five years. Once in the Alamo City, I knew I liked entertainment enough that I could make a career of it. I began an internship at Univision for two segments called “Despierta San Antonio” and “Tu Estilo.” From there, I realized radio was the path that I wanted to take. I applied for a promotions position with iHeart Media which gave me the opportunity to intern with the KJ and Friends morning show, MC a concert and freelance as talent. I know that working in radio means that one doesn’t stay in the same city for long. I look forward to my adventures ahead!
