University prepares for presidential inauguration Saturday

By Courtney Kaiser

Community leaders, corporate sponsors and the Board of Regents will descend on campus during the first week of October to celebrate the presidential inauguration of Cynthia Teniente-Matson, Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s second president.

The week’s lineup places student life at the center stage, focusing on the campus’ emphasis on the military and veteran students, a cultural play representing San Antonio’s rich and vivid Hispanic culture, a chili cook-off, and a series of concerts.

“The weeks events were picked to try to incorporate the different aspects of student life on campus,” said University Events Manager Leah Adrian

Roxanne Schroeder-Arce’s Mariachi Girl debuts for the first time Thursday Oct. 8. Schroeder-Arce previously wrote the script, but this will be its first live performance, Adrian said. She’s set to host a panel discussion about her experiences as a bilingual playwright Thursday at 3 p.m.

Matson, originally from San Antonio, returned to her hometown to take the leadership role after leaving her post as vice president for administration and chief financial officer at Fresno State University in Fresno, California.

Matson’s active approach on social media and in classrooms has made her well-known around campus as the president since beginning January 2015.

She is the second university president for Texas A&M University- San Antonio following Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier.

Culminating the week’s events, the inauguration ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10. in the Grand Courtyard on Main Campus.

“This is a way for students, faculty, the community and alumni to celebrate the next step in our university,” Adrian said.
