Week spotlights international students

Take a mini-trip around the world without even leaving campus. The office of international affairs at Texas A&M University-San Antonio will host an International Education Week starting Monday, Nov. 12.

To kick off the week there will be an International Flag Parade at 9:50 a.m. Nov. 12 in the Madla building lobby, lasting for about 30 minutes. International students will march around campus showing pride for their country of origin. Angola, Colombia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Morocco, Gabon, Bangladesh, Bosnia and other countries will be represented by students.

Following the parade at noon there will be an International Poster Fair in the Madla building lobby. Students will showcase their countries on posters during this session. The session will last until 1:30 p.m.

To get a little taste from around the world, international tea will be served 8:30-10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 in the Madla lobby. Students will be able to taste different teas from all over the world, such as Arabic tea representing the Middle East and Masala Chai from India.

To finish off International Education Week, students will be able to connect globally. International students will teach short and common phrases in their native languages to other students 1-2 p.m Wednesday, Nov. 14 in front of the bookstore in the Central Academic Building. Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, sign language and more will be taught.

“International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Education that recognizes the benefits of international exchange,” Sylvia Medel, director of International Affairs, said. “Educational institutions throughout the U.S. will celebrate a week of international events.”

This is the fourth year that the university will participate in International Education Week. This week is an opportunity for students to teach others about where they are from, and for other students to get a better insight on places they have yet to experience for themselves.
