Get ready for Super Tuesday

By Amanda Tetens

Early voting ended on Friday, Feb. 26 with more than 105,000 ballots cast in Bexar County. Along with their preferred political candidate, local voters have multiple referenda items and propositions on the ballot to vote on.

One that impacts Texas A&M University-San Antonio students is Referenda Item #5 on Campus Carry on the Democratic ballot, which states, “Should the Texas Legislature allow each public institution of higher education (not only private universities) to opt out of the ability to carry guns on campus?”

The Super Tuesday Primary is right around the corner. The nearest voting location for A&M-San Antonio students is also just as close.

Spicewood Park Elementary, located at 11303 Tilson Dr., is the closest polling location to the University’s Main Campus. For students at the Brooks-City Base Campus, the closest voting location is Foster Elementary, 6718 Pecan Valley Dr. Voting is available at both locations from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1. Other polling locations can be found on the Bexar County Election page.

Only registered voters with a valid photo ID, such as a current driver’s licence, can vote. Student ID cards are not a proper form of Identification according to the Bexar County Elections Office. A list of proper forms of identification can be found at VoteTexas.gov

Whether it’s Democrat or Republican, A&M-San Antonio students have their own criteria when picking a candidate.

“I staunchly believe that (Presidential) candidates should have military experience and a world-wise sense of foreign policy,” history senior  Deane E. Rapp said. “The wisdom should be with where the international issues are.”

“Texas will be the red state that it is and support the Republican nominee,” criminology senior Angel Rodriguez said. Rodriguez said he would like to see a candidate who is planning to address the rising cost of college tuition.

Students aren’t the only ones who understand how important elections can be.

“It is important that students have a voice in the democratic process,” said Jo Anna Benavides-Franke, assistant vice president for student engagement and student government association advisor. “Today’s vote will affect them tomorrow.”
