Texas A&M University-San Antonio will host a self-defense workshop to teach the proper way to use pepper spray 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 8 in Room 120 of the Madla Building.
University Police Chief Ronald Davidson will teach a two-hour training course in situational awareness and self-defensive techniques of using pepper spray.
The workshop will teach those who carry the spray how to feel confident in their abilities to make proper decisions if harm comes their way.
Davidson said he is a big advocate of pepper spray. He said it’s important to teach the correct use of pepper spray because many that own the spray aren’t familiar with it.
“Most people that may carry pepper spray have never gone out and practiced with it and many people don’t realize the amount of thumb pressure it takes to activate the spray,” Davidson said.
At the workshop Davidson will show the class how to properly handle and aim the pepper spray. The interactive class will include real-life scenarios in which Davidson plays an assailant.
Davidson laughed when he said he will be wearing a mask while getting sprayed.
“Don’t worry, we practice with water spray,” Davidson said.
The free pepper spray workshop is open to students, faculty and staff, who will receive a pepper spray keychain at the end of the class.
