Texas A&M University-San Antonio University leadership will host two forums this month to address inclusivity on campus.
President Matson and Melissa Mahan, vice president for Student Affairs, encourage faculty and staff to attend the forum 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 in the Vista Room, located in Central Academic Building.
A student forum will follow 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 24 in the Vista Room.
During Spring 2017 convocation on Jan. 12, Matson addressed the shifting political dynamics in higher education and introduced the idea of “inclusive excellence.”
Following the U.S. presidential election in November 2016, President Matson said she visited with students on campus, assuring them the institution supports their needs and success.
“It is important that we are thoughtful about outwardly visible signs of inclusion,” Matson said during convocation.
Matson said she and her colleagues will take proactive steps to connect with students to make sure they are aware of campus resources available and remind them that marginalized groups are supported.
Mahan said university leadership will create an inclusivity committee comprised of faculty and staff with the goal of helping the student body feel accepted and supported.
Erick De Luna, president of Student Government Association (SGA), said the group will attend the student forum, and collaborating with university leadership.
Jan Mundine, executive assistant II to the president, confirmed the inclusivity commission is in formation. The forums will address the purpose and role of the commission.
